Welcome to Housing Matters, Inc.

Housing Matters, Inc. is a non-profit organization that believes in its mission to assist, support, and connect persons in need with housing matters; support and promote families, neighborhoods, and economic self-sufficiency; and to partner with local agencies to expand the service to persons of low to moderate income, including seniors and persons with disabilities.

Housing Matters, Inc. intends to successfully execute their mission by focusing its resources on five areas...

1. Homeownership

Housing Matters, Inc. strives to help individuals and families become homeowners. We work with community lenders and agencies with programs that help fulfill a family’s dream of homeownership. We do this by connecting the people to the available resources and help walk them through the process to becoming a successful homeowner with payment and utility budgeting, home repair savings and general homeownership responsibilities.

2. Employment

Housing Matters, Inc. works closely with the Port Huron Housing Commission and their Resident Opportunity for Self Sufficiency (ROSS) Grant team to provide listings of available jobs in our community. We also work with MI-WORKS for job placements.

3. Education

Housing Matters, Inc. takes education for low-income people very seriously as we believe that an education is the first step to breaking the poverty cycle within a family. We believe this so much that we have started the Lee M. Sheldon Memorial Educational Scholarship and made it available to all Port Huron Housing Commission residents.

4. Self-Sufficiency

Although Self-Sufficiency is the key to anyone’s success, self-sufficiency is different with every individual and family to be considered successful. We are working with the Port Huron Housing Commission’s ROSS Grant team to work with individuals and families to case manage alongside them towards their goals of self-sufficiency, no matter what that goal is.

5. Entrepreneurship

Housing Matters, Inc. works as the nexus between individuals that want to start a business and the local agencies that can provide further education and guidance to become a successful entrepreneur. We help individuals achieve their start in the business ownership world.
